The 2014 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony kicked off Feb. 7 in Sochi, Russia, with participants from 88 countries waving their national flags proudly to the cheering crowd. The Sochi Olympics is the most expensive Olympic event to date, with Russia spending a record $50 million for the games.
This year’s ceremony kicked off with five big snowflakes. Each snowflake turned into an Olympic ring, but one of the five snowflakes failed to open up to form a ring. The Olympic cauldron was lit by Hockey star Vladislav Tretiak and gold-medalist Irina Rodnina. The Olympic torch was brought in by tennis champion Maria Sharapova who handed it to Alina Kabaeva. The ceremony also featured a 200ft-long lit-up Troika, an 18th century carriage pulled by three horses. Performances included the reenacting of the construction of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. The opening ceremony was all-in-all dazzling, despite the technical glitch at the beginning of the show. The highly anticipated Team Figure Skating event kicked off on Feb. 6.

Events available as video on demand afterwards The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics officially kick off Friday (Feb. 7) with the opening ceremony, which is being held in the 40,000-seat Fisht Olympic Stadium (pictured above). NBC’s Meredith Vieira says the ceremony will “present historic and modern-day Russia to the world,” as she interviews George Tsypin, the production designer for the ceremony. “I’ve done big shows but this is something else. It’s truly mind-boggling,” says Tsypin. “Of course, that ambition that comes from the Russians is to create the biggest show ever because they say, ‘We’re a big country, we have to do it.’”“I had to think about what makes Russia unique, and I think what makes it unique is the fact that Russians know how to dream,” Tsypin continues. “We need to look at the history of Russia almost as a series of dreams.” Information is scarce about the actual performances scheduled for the opening ceremony, but based on 3D models Tsypin showed to Vieira, it looks like viewers are in for a treat. The opening ceremony starts at approximately 12:15 p.m. ET/9:15 p.m. in Sochi. NBC is not streaming the event live. Instead, the network will air the ceremony Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT. The BBC will be covering the event live on its website.
